Dealing mainly with landscape subjects, I try to capture the essence of a place.  I try to avoid the literal and find my own way of representing the subject. I work mainly in watercolour as I enjoy the spontaneity of the medium, and like to allow it to dictate or suggest form.  I try to use a limited palette of colours, often no more than two or three, although I find this more difficult with larger scale work.  Texture is an important component, too, often suggested by layers, collage and by use of tools such as writing pens or brush ends.  My best work is completed quickly.  I refer to sketches and photographs, but use them more to refresh my memories of the sense of being there than to recreate detail.  I aim always for clarity and freedom in the end product, and for impact through use of simple design.
