Review of Winter Solstice concert by Thomas Hudson

(December 17, 2005)

On Saturday 17th of December Equinox, the newly formed saxophone octet played their Winter Solstice concert at St. Luke’s Church in Kinoulton. The church was full with young and old alike tuning up to watch. Equinox was led by Alistair Parnell an amazingly talented musician; he played the Soprano and Sopranino sax as well as the piano in some pieces. The other members were:

·        Nicola Pennill - Soprano and Alto sax.

·        Gayle Williams - Alto sax.

·        Daniel Christian - Alto sax.

·        Sue Hallam - Tenor sax.

·        Becki Dean - Tenor sax.

·        Matt Lond - Baritone sax.

·        Michelle Phillips - Baritone sax.

The group played really well together and they all put a lot of emotion into their playing. Their pieces ranged from ‘Winter from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi’ to ‘Moondance by Van Morrison’ and were all very good. They flowed and dynamics were used to give the up most effect. Some of the pieces Alistair played on his own but others he played with one, two or the whole of Equinox. Some of the other pieces they played were:

  • ‘The Celtic Suite’ by Gavin Whitlock - Equinox.
  • ‘Gabriel’s Message’ Basque Carol - Alistair.
  • ‘Trio Sonata’ by JS Bach - Alistair, Nicola and Michelle.
  • ‘Dreams of you’ by Dave McGarry - Nicola.

And many other brilliantly played pieces. All of the pieces were played to the highest of standards. Overall the concert was incredibly enjoyable and it was a good evening’s entertainment. I would highly recommend their concerts to all as they are wonderful. Well done Equinox!!
